Hello Gleeks! Are you hoping for a companion series for Glee? Fret not, ’cause you’re not alone. But will the musical comedy get an offshoot from FOX? Let’s find out..
Two months ago, Glee wrapped up its sixth and final season. The finale was watched by 2.6 million viewers — with a 0.8 rating — an uptick of 33% from last year’s season ender.
To be honest, those numbers are just basically not strong enough. And networks ALWAYS eye on the money before giving a show a shot on a spinoff. When Glee debuted six years ago, it targeted 3.5 million viewers averaging a 3.5 rating.
Glee’s performance, albeit its solid fan base, has not been consistent over the years. Now for the burning question, “Will it get a spinoff?”. Series alum Kevin McHale addressed the show’s future in an interview with Huffington Post, citing the weakness in viewership of the show. He said:
Towards the end, there weren’t that many people watching ‘Glee.’ So I don’t know how many people would then watch a spinoff. We’re off the air for a reason.
McHale also added that the death of Cory Monteith deeply affected the cast and writers, making it difficult to set up a new direction for the show.
I guess that answers our question, atleast for now. You’ll never know, Netflix and other streaming giants are just around the corner… *fingers crossed*
